On December 10, 2022, Michael Kean Bateman, a beloved husband, father, friend and mentor passed away at the age of 83 surrounded by his family in his home. He is survived by his wife Christine, siblings Lawrence, Peter and Pamela Masse, his four children, Michael Jr. (Patricia), Belinda Lewis (James), Ashley Immanuel (Sam), and Robert. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, Emma, Nolan and Will Bateman, James, Martin and Audrey Lewis, and Brooke and Samuel Immanuel.
Mike grew up in in Barrington Hills, Illinois, and he loved to compete. He was a three-sport athlete and captained his football and baseball teams at St. Andrews School in Middletown, Delaware. He attended Brown University before joining the US Army, where he was stationed in Asmara, Eritrea.
Once his military service was complete, he was hired by Honeywell in the emerging technology industry as a salesperson. After leaving Honeywell, he founded International Data Sciences, and was the company’s Chairman and CEO for six years before selling the business to Arthur Anderson. It was at this point he joined Tandem Computers, serving as VP and General Manager of the US Central Division as well as several other executive positions. After twenty years at Tandem, he moved to the next phase of his career, consulting with founders of startup tech companies, helping them secure venture capital and enabling them to get their businesses up and running. Mike was seen as an excellent business mentor who gave generously of his time and guidance.
Mike was a loving father who was always there to support his children. He knew when to be tough and when to be gentle, while guiding them to be strong, independent, and loving people. Later in life Mike acquired a passion for golf and was known at his club for being the “old guy” who walked 18 holes multiple times a week. He enjoyed following his favorite sports teams, working on projects around the house, playing tennis and pool, and spending time with his friends and family. Although diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2021, he said repeatedly “nobody should feel sorry for me,” and spoke about how blessed he was in this life. He will be missed dearly, and his passing leaves a large void in the hearts of all whom he has touched.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Davenport Family Funeral Home & Crematory, 149 W. Main Street, Barrington IL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mike’s memory to
