Norman Richard Carr, 88, of Woodstock Illinois; formerly of Barrington and Fox River Grove, died peacefully Monday, April 27, 2015 at the Valley Hi Nursing Home, Woodstock Illinois.
Norman was born January 7, 1927, in Chicago at Swedish Covenant Hospital, to Henry and Stella (Ziollin) Carr. His mother remarried soon after to William (Bill) Vaughn, and he was raised through his childhood in Chicago by his mother and Bill.
Norm attended Le Moyne Grammar School, and graduated from Chicago’s Lake View High School in June 1946. His education, however, was put on hold by World War II.
In January 1944, at age 17, Norm enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard LCI 982 in the Pacific. During his service he traveled through the Panama Canal to China, Polynesia, the Philippines, and other South Pacific wartime locations. He received several commendations and medals, including the Victory Medal, China Service Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Amphibious Force Insignia, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in May, 1946.
After the war, he went on to finish his education at Western Illinois University, Macomb, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1951.
Macomb is where Norm met Julia Louise Fluegel, and they married on July 5th 1952. The couple then moved back to Chicago, eventually settling in Barrington, where they set about raising their large family of six children. The home he built there 50 years ago is still referred to as the “Carr house.”
Norm enjoyed taking his family on fishing vacations in Canada and Wisconsin, where he was expert at catching trophy sized musky and walleye. He was also an avid and accomplished golfer, and could be seen out on the links every Saturday morning at Stonehenge Country Club when he lived in Barrington.
As a WWII veteran, in August, 2012 he was selected to travel on an “Honor Flight” to Washington D.C. to visit our Nation’s Capital. He was proudly accompanied by his son Mark on this trip.
Norm is survived by his sons; Dana (Norene) Carr of Fox River Grove Illinois, Craig Carr of Moab Utah, and Scott (Sharon) Carr of Hot Springs Arkansas, daughters; Lynn (Jim) Zito of Pilot Point Texas, and Joy (Rick) Venuso of Fox River Grove Illinois, grandchildren; Steven, Joseph, Ediemarie, and Penny, great-Grandchildren; Abigail and Margaret. He was preceded in death by his wife Julia (Judy) in 1992, and son Mark in 2014.
