T. Patrick Costello, 73, of South Barrington, passed away on June 27, 2016, at his home.
Although Pat was a successful businessman and veteran of the U.S. Army, this obituary will not focus on his accomplishments – he would have hated that. He would prefer we focus on the people he left behind.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hazel Costello; his sister Ruth and three great family dogs, who were most likely waiting at the Rainbow Bridge to welcome him to Heaven.
He is the survived by the love of his life, his wife Connie, who he married during the great Chicago blizzard of 1967. At the end of his life, his biggest concern was making sure she was OK when he departed.
Pat had six children: Pat (Melissa), Terri McHugh (Pat), Scott (Meg), Brian (Heather), Greg (Angie) and Julie Schmidt (Jon). He taught them many things, such as how to fetch tools, how to light fireworks in a campground, how to cut in line, how to be competitive and driven, but most importantly how to put family first.
His children gave him 20 beloved grandchildren: Blake, Brittney, Jessie, Samantha, Josh, Jake, Ilyin, Tyler, Dylan, Ben, Luke, Sasha, Mila, Max, Liv, Kai, Charlotte, Jaxson, Makayla and Brayden. Despite fighting cancer for 14 years, he was never more alive than when he was surrounded by his grandkids. Some have been lucky to know him for up to 20 years and have fond memories of Pete the Fly, Joe Putzivoukum and the games he invented such as – It’s Not Real and Who Stole My Plate. Others are too young to remember him but will know him through the many stories our family loves to tell, some embellished and some too crazy to make up.
He is also survived by six siblings and numerous nieces and nephews. Many shared fond memories of their brother and uncle during his final days. His greatest wish for you would be to keep sharing the memories and the love.
The family will receive guests from 4 until 9 p.m., on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St. in Barrington.
Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral Mass at 10 a.m., on Friday, July 1, 2016, at St. Anne Catholic Church, 120 Ela St. in Barrington. Burial will be private.
Pat wouldn’t have known the difference between a carnation and a tulip, and was known to buy fake flowers at gas stations, so flowers are not necessary.
