Patricia Cornelia Ricks

Patricia Cornelia (Suderman) Ricks, was a devout Christian whose faith was exemplified by her life. She was a woman of prayer. Jesus was her rock and salvation and her faith remained strong to the end. Patricia married Walter Ricks in 1951 in Kankakee, Illinois. They were married for nearly 50 years until his death in 2001. Pat and Walt had four children, Sandy, Sally, Sheri, and Shelli. The family lived in Michigan and Indiana, moving to Elk Grove Village, IL in 1965. In 1967, Pat returned to work as a cook and continued with a career in food service until she retired in 2001. In 2003, Pat moved to Crystal Lake where she resided until the time of her death.

Pat’s birth name was Cornelia, born in Comins, MI, to Jacob and Cornelia (Harder) Suderman. At 18 she legally changed her name to Patricia after her friends began calling her “Pat.” Patricia was the oldest of eight children, four born to Cornelia and Jacob, and four born to Cornelia and Henry Suderman. Her father Jacob died tragically when Pat was just five years old. Her mother then married Henry, Jacob’s younger brother.

Patricia loved the Bible, memorizing Bible verses as a youth. As a teen, she played piano for her church. She loved to sing and joined a community chorus. Pat loved to bake, famous for her apple and cherry pies and cheesecake. She was a seamstress and quilt-maker, making quilts for many in her family. Pink was Pat’s favorite color. Her world was pink – walls, decorations, clothing, and floral arrangements. One could feel her love and the peace of God in her home.

Patricia is survived by her sisters: Lynda Robinson, Gladys Webster, Clarice (Keith) Finney, and Letha (Pete) Hudson; daughters: Sandy (Steve) Hufton, Sally (Larry) Magallanes, Sheri (Darryl) Lathrop, and Shelli (Ron) Hedgcock; grandchildren: Ryan (Lindsay) Landry, Sean (Kerri) Landry, Ron Hedgcock, Sarah Hedgcock, Kevin (Jakki McDonald) Buchik, and Kati (Sun Chae) Carlisle; step-grandchildren: Danielle (Scott) DuBose and Mark (Patty) Magallanes; and great-grandchildren: Angel, Alex, Ava, Lucas, Dexter, Edie, and Isabella. Her husband Walter Ricks, and brothers Edward Suderman, George Suderman, and Albert Suderman preceded her in death.

We are forever grateful for having Patricia in our lives — mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor, and friend. She will be forever in our hearts. In honor of Patricia, we suggest people wear something Pink to her Memorial Service.
