Paul Dwyer Haverkampf

A loving and gentle, Paul Dwyer Haverkampf, died peacefully in his Cary home on February 9, 2022.  He was born August 10, 1934, to Raymond and Marie (nee Dwyer) Haverkampf.

Paul attended Dundee Schools and was a graduate of Dundee High School Class of 1953.  He then attended Elgin Community College and later joined the U.S. Air Force in which he served for 4 years.

Upon returning to Dundee, he followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather in trades and woods.  His grandfather owned a blacksmith shop with later became the Anvil Club.  His father was co-owner of Dundee Lumber.  Paul worked as a carpenter and foreman primarily in bridge building until his retirement.  Even after his retirement, he continued his building skills, especially making awesome furniture in his workshop.

While living in Dundee as a young man, he was elected to the East Dundee Village Board, again, following in his father’s footsteps in community politics.  His father had been the mayor of Dundee at one time.  Paul was a member of the of the Dundee Jaycees having served one term as president.  He also served on the board of the Dundee Scots Marching Band.

Paul’s great baritone voice and love of music enabled him to have the lead in his high school production of Brigadoon.  He later directed the choir at St. Catherine’s of Sienna Church in Dundee, was a member of St. Mary’s Choir in Huntley, and was a member of the 80 persons Spirit of Life Choir out of Roselle.  Paul was often asked to sing at weddings.

With a passion for golf, Paul and his wife Joanne spent many vacations on the Links, their favorite being the Robert Trent Trail in Alabama.  They subsequently built a home on the golf course in Lake Carroll, IL which they enjoyed for 12 years.

After moving to Cary and the Fox River, Paul enjoyed his second passion, boating.  He also became an avid supporter of his grandchildren and step grandchildren’s athletic endeavors.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Joanne (nee Ludwig); children, Scott, David (Lorraine), and Kim (Doug) Bond; grandchildren, Morgan (Jared) DeBlieck, Kyle, Daniel and Veronica Haverkampf and Trevor Thayor; great grandchildren, Lillian and Iris DeBlieck; stepsons, Joel (Linda) Ludwig, Ronald (Rita) Ludwig and Mark (Lynn) Ludwig; nine step grandchildren and four step great grandchildren.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Maryelyn (Bob) Heiser; brother, William Haverkampf; and daughter-in-law, Susan Haverkampf.

Mass will be held at 10am, Saturday, February 19, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee-Huntley Rd, Huntley, with a visitation to begin at 9am.   Burial will follow at Windridge Memorial Park, Cary.
