Ralph N. Backe, 84, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully at home on the morning of Thursday, January 4, 2024. Born on August 19, 1939, in Gary, IN, Ralph was the beloved son of Nicholas and Dorothy (Spitz) Backe.
A proud veteran, Ralph served in the Army as a Military Police K9 handler, demonstrating both discipline and a deep love for animals. His post-military life was enriched by his marriage to Nora “Ellen” Gunn. Their remarkable 60-year journey together was filled with joy and the nurturing of their five wonderful children, creating a legacy of love and unity.
Ralph's passion for sports was evident to all who knew him. He channeled this passion into a fulfilling career as a Golf Pro at Turnberry and Prestwick Country Clubs. His love for the game was only surpassed by the joy he found in interacting with club members and the public. Ralph was known for his friendly demeanor, never encountering a stranger he couldn't befriend, and always eager for a spirited game of cards, with gin being his game of choice.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Nora “Ellen”; children, Judith (Michael), Nick (Heather), Bruce (Tammy), Susan (Gordy), and Matt (Lauren); and a legacy of grandchildren: Zach, Trace, Cade, Emma, Brennan, Gunner, Ireland, Jack, and Everly, as well as great-grandchildren Bradley and Brooks. His siblings, David, Mary, and Monica, will also hold his memory dear.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; his great-granddaughter Harper; and his siblings, Mike, Eddie, and Jim. His life was a tapestry of love, service, and community, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he met.
A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, January 12, from 3 pm until a service at 6 pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ralph’s memory to the American Heart Association or the Cerebral Palsy Foundation , reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping others.
