Richard “Dick” Price Averill of South Haven, Michigan died peacefully on September 27, 2020 in Barrington, Illinois at the age of 85. He was born to the late Harold and Helen Averill on April 24, 1935 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Richard is survived by his wife, Carol Zamow Averill; children Chris (Karen) Averill of Bartlett, Illinois, Sally (Jim) Haufschild of Barrington, Illinois, Peggy (John) Largent of New Albany, Ohio, Peter (Gayle) Averill of Newark, California, Suzanne (Alan Nadolna) Averill of Wilmette, Illinois, and David (Kelly) Averill of Seattle, Washington; 18 grandchildren; and a cousin, Barbara Thompson of Grand Rapids, Michigan.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Mary (Marilou) Helen Francis McLaughlin.
Richard married Carol Zamow on August 10, 1957. Richard and Carol traveled extensively both nationally and internationally, including Rotary Club mission trips to Africa and India. Richard was passionate about his wife Carol, his children, grandchildren, his extended family, tennis, sailing, Lake Michigan sunsets, Sherman’s ice cream, and gin & tonics. He was known as a man who loved to throw great parties for his friends, his family and his grandchildren, who will always remember his famous pancakes and waffles.
Richard graduated from Catholic Central High School in Grand Rapids in1953. He attended Aquinas College, and graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1959. Richard was a devout Catholic, and dedicated his life to the service of others. In South Haven, Richard was an active member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church, Habitat for Humanity, and the South Haven Rotary Club. Richard served terms as president of both Habitat for Humanity and the Rotary Club. Richard’s professional career was centered on the automotive industry, culminating in his ownership of Hydro-Cam Engineering Company, located in Troy, Michigan.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the South Haven Rotary Club ( southhavenrotary.org ). The family would like to thank JourneyCare Care Center for their efforts during Richard’s hospice stay.
