Born July 18, 1943 in Pittsburgh PA, Rick grew up in Berea, Ohio and Oakmont, PA. He passed away March 7, 2025 in McHenry, IL. As a youth, Rick enjoyed building things with this brothers, played Coronet in the band, and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Shady Side Academy in Fox Chapel PA. From there he attended Iowa State University, graduating with a degree in technical journalism in 1966. Following graduation he married his college sweetheart, Pat. As a Navy ensign he reported aboard the USS Kingbird in Charleston SC. A transfer to Great Lakes Naval Training Center brought Rick, Pat and their infant son, Russ, to Illinois. After discharge from the Navy, Rick went to work for Technical Publishing in Barrington, IL. The couple, now a family of four with the birth of daughter Lee, moved to Crystal Lake in 1972. A third child, Ryan, made the family complete. As editor-in-chief of Plant Engineering magazine Rick worked throughout his career to advance professionalism in the fields of industrial engineering and the business press.
Outside work Rick was active in Jaycees, Boy Scouts and improving his golf game! Camping trips with family in their RV were highlights. Rick’s faith always shone brightly and he lived this by giving efforts to classes and committee work at church and by lending his rich bass voice to the choir. Retirement allowed Rick opportunity to enjoy more family time, to travel and to polish his photography skills. Pictures of family and scenic views from the many places they visited now adorn their retirement home.
Rick leaves behind his wife, Pat Dunn and children, Russ Dunn of San Leandro CA, Lee Haas (Kevin) of Chicago IL, and Ryan Dunn (Gina) of Nashville TN. He leaves behind three grandchildren, Maura Haas, Delaney Haas, and Braden Dunn; a brother, Jack Dunn (Kay) of Denver CO; and a sister-in-law, Sally Dunn of Hellertown PA.
