Richard Spears

January 2, 1930 — April 20, 2016

Richard “Dick” M. Spears, 86, of Cary passed away April 20, 2016. He was born January 2, 1930 in Chicago.

He married the love of his life, Janet Zeuli, on February 6, 1954. Together they raised four wonderful sons.

Dick was a master carpenter who took enormous pride in his family. He adored spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The Cubs, Blackhawks, Bulls, and Bears had no greater fan than Dick. He celebrated their successes and criticized their failures. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, and you could often find him doing word-search puzzles with a Fudgesicle stick at the kitchen table. He was a masterful card player. You’d often hear Dick preaching about money, work, the Golden Years, children, health, and communication. Christmas was his favorite holiday and he could not wait to get a glimpse of his grandchildrens’ wish lists.

Dick was a veteran of the Navy serving in the Korean War. He was a retired carpenter for Local #839.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Janet; sons, Daniel (Teresa), Randy (Susan), Timothy (Ann); grandchildren, Michael (Carlie), Teri, Daniel Jr., Amanda (Chad) Hullinger, A.J., and Lauren; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Jordan, Jaelyn, Zachary, and Kailyn; and siblings, Joseph, Gerald, and Juanita; many nieces and nephews; and his devoted four-legged companion, Buddy.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ricky; his parents; and siblings, Donald, Walter, Thomas, and Rozella.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 24, from 3 PM until 9 PM at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E Terra Cotta Ave, Crystal Lake. Visitation will continue from 9:00 AM until 10 AM on Monday at the funeral home. Funeral mass will start at 11 AM at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 111 S Hubbard St., Algonquin.
