Richard E. Stech, 96, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025. Born on December 26, 1928, in Berwyn, Illinois, he was the youngest of five sons to Joseph and Wilamina (Zelenka) Stech, with a sister following him.
A proud Army veteran, Richard served his country with honor and sustained injuries during his service. Upon his discharge, he married Audrey Flemm on October 3, 1953. Growing up in the same neighborhood, they knew each other their whole lives.
Richard's zest for life was evident in his love for nature and people. An avid athlete, he especially enjoyed playing baseball. He believed in working hard, playing hard, and relishing every moment. His integrity, honesty, and generosity were pillars of his character, always striving to bring out the best in himself and others.
A true outdoorsman, Richard found joy in tending to his yard and gardens. His son, Larry, lovingly remarked that "God has gained another gardener" with Richard's passing, reflecting his father's deep passion for cultivating beauty in the world. Richard cherished moments by the lake, indulging in reading and crossword puzzles, and took immense pleasure in watching his family enjoy the lake's beauty. Fishing and boating were among his favorite pastimes, and he delighted in providing a haven for family gatherings, celebrating each other and God's creation.
Richard was preceded in death by his siblings, Ervin, Raymond, Joseph, Frank, and Jean. He is survived by his beloved wife, Audrey; children, Laurance (Patti) Stech and Diane Stech; grandchildren, Kelly (Ryan) Habbley, Mitchell (Alexis) Stech, Faye (Richie) DeMarco, and Benjamin Stech; great-grandchildren, Sawyer Habbley, Lucas DeMarco, and Miles DeMarco; and numerous caring nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 4, from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10 a.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 4501 Main St, Downers Grove, IL. Interment will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
