Robert Charles Paulsen

Robert Charles Paulsen, age 86, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

Born in Elgin, IL, on October 18, 1938, Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army. When he was drafted, he and his beloved wife, Kay, were already married, and she accompanied him to Texas, where he was stationed. Their unwavering devotion to one another was evident in every aspect of their lives, and their love story spanned 61 beautiful years.

A man of many passions, Robert was an avid golfer who rarely missed a chance to hit the course twice a week. However, his greatest love outside of his family was horses. For over 40 years, Robert cared for and rode his horses at home, and when he could no longer manage them himself, he entrusted his beloved horse to his daughter. Even then, he continued to ride, cherishing every moment in the saddle. His favorite horse, Hoover, held a special place in his heart, and though he rode many others, none could quite compare. Robert was an accomplished barrel racer who competed in the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) circuit until the age of 74, an extraordinary achievement. He even qualified for the World Finals twice, with Kay by his side at every event. Though she didn’t ride, she was his biggest supporter—cheering him on, ensuring his safety, and quietly reading her books between races. Barrel racing wasn’t just a sport for Robert; it was a way of life that strengthened his family bonds. He, Kay, and their daughters often spent weekends traveling to competitions, a tradition that carried on with the next generation. Even after retiring from competition, Robert never missed a show. He helped care for the horses, carried hay, and assisted in preparing them to run. He was always eager to know when and where the next event would be. His joy grew even greater when his grandchildren took up riding, and he proudly told anyone who would listen that they were his grandkids.

Above all, Robert was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family meant everything to him, and he was always present in their lives—never missing a sporting event, a horse show, or an opportunity to support them. His love, guidance, and humor left an indelible mark, with cherished memories that will be carried forward for generations. He often told his daughters if they ever fell off a horse, he’d catch them on the second bounce—a testament to both his quick wit and his ever-present support.

Robert is survived by his loving daughters, Kathy (Tim) Lenz and Linda (Hank) Olesen; his grandchildren, Matthew (Bry) Olesen, Sarah (Jay) Mabry, Kyle (Erin) Olesen, Tiffany Lenz, and Joshua Lenz; and his great-grandchildren, Dom and Landon. His presence will be deeply missed, not only by his family but also by his extended NBHA and horse show family, who became an integral part of his life. The echoes of his laughter, his steadfast support, and the love he shared will forever remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kay Paulsen (née Richards); his parents, Edward and Esther Paulsen; and his brother, Richard E. Paulsen.
