Roman E. Macygin, age 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 with his children at his side.
Roman was born in Horchow, Ukraine on October 18, 1937 to Edward Macygin and Maria Bochenek. He came to the United States in 1951with his mother and sister after being held in work camps during WWII where they escaped the Nazi’s by bootlegging whiskey and trading on the black market. He saw his first baseball game through the window of an appliance store in New York after being processed through Ellis Island. He instantly fell in love with the game, and all American sports. Living in Chicagoland nearly his whole life, he loved the Bears, the Hawks and especially the Cubs.
Coming to America with no money and not speaking English, Roman believed in hard work as the path to success. He built a prosperous industrial contracting business that took him, and his “guys,” all across the United States. Mention almost any state or small town and Roman would say, “we did a job near there!”
For all his accomplishments, Roman was most proud of his children. He was often heard saying how lucky he was to have this entire family.
Roman is survived by, his loving children, Michael Macygin (Becky Miles), Steven (Frankie) Macygin and Kim Marie Macygin (Jim Santopadre); his sister, Sophie (Bill) Pearson, granddaughters, Melissa (Nick) Bowron, Cassie (CJ) Tipps and TJ (Bre) Macygin, nieces Cheryll Pearson, Jeanette (Eric Newsham) Pearson, and Deborah (J) Schneider, great-grandson, Landon Tipps, as well as his yellow lab and constant companion, Sam.
Preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Judi, his mother and father and his beloved and devoted dog, Hank.
