Ronald "Ron" Reed

Ron was born August 9, 1935 in Ashton, IL to Robert and Ruth Reed. He passed away January 5, 2017 in Woodstock.

Ron was born and raised in Ashton, IL, a rural community west of Rockford. He remained closely connected to the town and community throughout his entire life. After graduating from Monmouth College in 1957, he came to Crystal Lake where he began his career as a teacher in School District 47. He later completed his Master’s degree at Northern Illinois University and then served as a Speech/Language Pathologist for the remainder of his educational career in District 47. Ron was one of the early presidents of the teachers’ association, CLETA. Following retirement, he was active in the McHenry County Retired Teachers’ Association.

Ron was a faithful church member throughout his lifetime. He attended The First United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake, Christ Church in Algonquin and The Congregational Church in Algonquin. He was active in church choirs, Sunday School and Men’s Fellowship Groups.

Ron was a long time resident of Crystal Lake until, due to chronic health issues, he moved to Florence Nursing Home in Marengo. He lived there for almost 8 years participating in numerous activities, befriending many residents and enjoying special visitors. Ron and his wife Bobbie celebrated their 50th anniversary last June at Florence with friends and family members.

Ron is survived by his wife, Roberta “Bobbie” Reed of Crystal Lake, IL; daughter, Emily Reed of Fox Lake, IL; sister, Barbara (Charles) Eaton of San Rafael, CA and brother, Jon (Nancy) Reed of Salem, OR, nieces and nephew: Julie, Susan, Scott, Amy and Holly, and cousins: Dolores Reynolds, Janelle Haack and Suzanne Huang. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial visitation will be at Davenport Funeral Home, 419 East Terra Cotta Ave (Rte 176) Crystal Lake, IL on Thursday, January 12th from 3-7 p.m. A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Friday, January 13th at 1:00 p.m. at The Congregational Church of Algonquin, 109 Washington Street Algonquin, IL. (1 block South of Highway 62 and 1 block East of Main Street.)
