Rosina (Bartolf) Hedrich

August 2, 1922 — April 26, 2018

Rosina Hedrich of Crystal Lake was born to Eternal Life peacefully, Thursday April 26 at the age of 95 years.  Dearest Mother to Marty and Lolly (John) Kroos; loving and devoted Grandma to David (Lana), Scott Kroos, Heidi, Todd (Laura) Kroos and Tim (Noemi); a wonderful, caring and loving Great Grandma, “Crystal Lake Grandma” and “Oma” to Nina, Nicole, Elizabeth, Courtney, Kari, Amanda, Justin, Austin, Bailey, Faith, Katie, Nate and Micah.
She was preceeded in death by her husband of 74 years Martin; parents Rosina and Johann Bartolf; daughter-in-law, Marilyn; one sister, three brothers; and her first Great Grandson Jacob.  She is further survived by other relatives and friends.
Rosina was born in Liebling, Romania on August 2, 1922 and, with her husband and his family, left Romania in 1945, traveling to Austria and eventually came to the United States in 1950.  They settled in Crystal Lake with family and eventually many friends.
Rosina enrolled at the McHenry School of Beauty Culture in December of 1961 and after 1,000 hours of instruction and examinations she graduated and opened Rosina’s Beauty Salon in Crystal Lake.  Her customers became lifelong friends and with broken English she would talk for hours as her hands cut hair, washed heads, gave perms and on and on.  Her shop was in downtown Crystal Lake and, as she worked upstairs, her husband did his wood working downstairs.  When it was time to retire, she only consented if her husband would build on to their house so she could still do the “hair” of her friends.
Rosina and her husband traveled extensively throughout the world with friends and family, including taking their children and grandchildren to Europe several times.  She loved going “UP NORTH” to the cottage for relaxation and knitting but never for fishing.
Her hands were amazing not only working with hair but also with knitting and crocheting.  She has made thousands of slippers, mittens, hats, gloves and afghans and crocheted angels that hang on our Christmas trees.  It was amazing watching her hands work with her eyes elsewhere.  We think she could knit in her sleep.  Her husband made things out of wood but Rosina used yarn for her legacy.  The family and all her friends that received her gifts will remember her through them.
As her granddaughter-in-law stated:  “Oma, one of the toughest, strongest and sweetest woman I ever met!  Endured so much but created a great life and raised an amazing family.  I’m grateful to have had her in our lives.”
Visitation will be from 10am until time of her memorial service at 11am on Saturday May, 19, 2018 at Saint Paul’s United Church of Christ, 485 Woodstock St., Crystal Lake, Il 60014.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Paul’s Church would be appreciated.
