Sally Moore

May 22, 1942 — December 14, 2013

Sally Joan Moore, of Barrington, Illinois passed away on December 14, 2013 in Barrington. She was 71. Sally was born May 22, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Donald Frederick Landwer and Eveline Marie Christoph.
Sally attended Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio where she met her future husband, C. Curtis Moore, during her freshman year. She graduated from Otterbein with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education in 1964 and began her career teaching first grade in her hometown of Port Washington, New York. Sally and Curt were married in Manhasset, NY on July 17, 1965. Following her husband’s Air Force career, Sally continued teaching first grade in Nebraska and Maryland. She later returned to teaching pre-school when her own children were grown.
Sally lived many places in her life, supporting her husband as they moved eight times before settling in Barrington in 1983. Barrington was like coming home, since Sally’s father Donald was born there. Her great-grandfather Bernhard Landwer built the first house in what is now Barrington after arriving from Micklenberg, Prussia in 1848.
In her life, Sally was committed to many things but none more than children: her own, Laura and Mike, and three grandchildren, Drew, Heather and Nicholas and her nieces. She touched so many students of her lifetime: as a first grade teacher, Sunday school teacher and pre school teacher. The arts were always part of her life. Sally loved to sing, and her voice took her to the lead in the musical ‘Brigadoon’ and across Europe with her church choir.
Around the children in her life, she filled their world with joyful song. She dabbled in art mediums and found a true talent in photography later in life. Sally took thousands of beautiful pictures documenting trips over the last decade that she and her husband Curt enjoyed together.
Sally was a true lover of her home, family and many, many friends. She cared for those not as fortunate as she was. She loved traveling, playing all kinds of games and laughing with friends. Sally is survived by her husband of 48 years, C. Curtis Moore and her sister Ruth Sakkaf, of Reisterstown, MD. She leaves behind her daughter Laura Joan Spangenberg and her husband Scott Spangenberg, of Shrewsbury, MA, and her son Michael Mitchell Moore and his wife Stacey Mackes of Hummelstown,PA. Her grandchildren Drew Spangenberg, Heather Spangenberg and Nicholas Moore were fortunate to have known their Grandma Nana’s love.
A memorial service will be held on January 6. Sally requested donations in lieu of flowers. She wanted nothing more than to help children. The Home of the Sparrow helps homeless women and children near her home in Barrington and was one of her favorite charities. http://www.h-o-s.org. She was also interested in helping the Children's Christian Education Fund at the Presbyterian Church of Barrington. http://www.pcbarrington.org
