Samuel “Sam” Garre III, 80, of Barrington, died, Thursday, July 30, 2015, in Barrington.
He was born on May 18, 1935, to Samuel Jr. and Barbara Garre, in New Rochelle, New York and grew up spending his summers at his family home on Cape Cod.
Sam received his Bachelor’s degree from Franklin Marshall College in 1957, and went on to receive his Master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1958. Sam worked for 30 years with US Gypsum, and finished his career with 10 years at Chemical Waste Management.
He was a devoted husband and father. He was a volunteer and community service member for many organizations, including being a Leader of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Indian Guides, a Trustee for the Elgin Academy (EA Distinguished Service Medal), a Chairperson for the first fundraising committee for Hospice of Northeastern Illinois (now JourneyCare), and a member of Barrington’s Community Action 220 Committee.
Sam was a member of the Eastward Ho! Country Club in Chatham, MA, Barrington Hills Country Club, Society of the Cincinnati, Society of the Colonial Wars, and the Mayflower Society. Among Sam’s passions in life, he especially loved golf, reading history and biographies, making wooden nautical flagpoles, and spending time with family.
Sam is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Maryjo (nee Simjian) Garre; children, Samuel Garre IV, Gregory George (Lorane Hebert) Garre, and Karen Garre (Aaron) Burmeister; grandchildren, Samantha and William Burmeister, and Natalie and Sawyer Garre; two nieces, one nephew and five cousins. Sam also leaves behind his beloved Briard, Brewster.
He was preceded in death by his brother, David C. (Patricia) Garre, and their parents.
Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 5, at Presbyterian Church of Barrington, 6 Brinker Road, Barrington Hills, IL 60010.
Burial will be held privately at Union Cemetery, Chatham, Massachusetts.
