(Brooke Chamberlain) Porter; cherished grandfather of Stuart G. and Jack Porter and Christine, Andrew and Reed Porter; devoted son of Stuart Perlee and Alma Bernice Porter, fond brother of William (Kathleen) Porter of Gaylord, MI. Known to his friends as "Stu", Mr. Porter was a lifelong resident of the greater Chicago area. He will be most remembered for his loyal friendships, his devotion to his family and friends and especially to those who battled against cancer. After being diagnosed in 2002 with terminal prostate cancer, he had made it his life?s purpose to help those who had been stricken by prostate cancer through his friendship, philanthropy and board service at Wellness Place, in Palatine, Illinois where he established and served as Chairman of The President?s Council. His efforts continued with his active support of The "Us TOO" International Prostate Cancer Education and Support Network, as well as his support of his wife in founding The Greater Chicago Prostate Cancer Walk. There were many men who battled, and continue to battle, prostate cancer who viewed Stu Porter as a partner in their fight against the disease. He was a proud graduate of Grosse Pointe High School in 1955; University of Michigan with degrees in mathematics and engineering in 1960; and University of Chicago?s Graduate School of Business in 1967 where he received his M.B.A., earned distinction of Beta Gamma Sigma and passed his doctoral exams in economics. He then became a faculty member of University of Illinois, Chicago Circle Campus, where he taught accounting and statistics. During this period he also served in the Air National Guard in France, when President John F. Kennedy activated reserves during the Berlin crisis. In 1969 Mr. Porter joined the Chicago investment bank A.G. Becker where he became Director of Research and National Director of the Funds Evaluation Service. In 1977 he joined the investment firm of Weiss, Peck & Greer where he became Managing Partner of the Chicago office and CEO of the Quantitative Equity Division. After a brief retirement, he co-founded SPC Capital, a private equity "fund of funds" firm located in Deerfield, Illinois. His passion for the investment business included roles outside his firm where he served on the Investment Committee of the Presbytery of Chicago and his service as a Director of The Institute of Quantitative Research in Finance. His devotion to his clients was encapsulated by his motto: "Investment performance can be ephemeral, but relationships are eternal." Mr. Porter?s devotion to his colleagues was legendary with one former partner stating that no one at a former firm matched him in terms of "character, morality and just plain humanness."
