Kiernan, Thomas Earl, MD, 85, born August 26, 1929 passed away June 19, 2015 after a brief illness. Thomas most recently resided in Barrington, Illinois but lived and practiced medicine in Sioux Center and Newton, Iowa. In retirement, Thomas and wife Darlene resided in Savannah, Georgia and the Cayman Islands. He is survived by his children, Jane Kray (James) and James Kiernan (Rita); five grandchildren, Thomas and Jennifer Kray and Mallory, Bridget, and Delaney Kiernan; sisters-in-laws, Sylva Kiernan and June Vanden Berge and brother-in-law, James Vanden Berge, along with several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of greater than 55 years, Darlene, his parents Earl and Gertrude; sister, Patricia Olerich (late Carl); and brother Max; sisters-in-laws, Ruth DeVries (late Frank) and Jean Hawkins (late Richard) and brothers-in-laws, Lloyd and Peter Vanden Berge.
The “Old Chap” was an amazing man, an excellent husband, father and grandfather and a skilled and compassionate physician. He loved to read and travel and one of his most memorable trips was a safari he and Darlene took to Africa. He was generous with mulligans on the golf course and amazingly lucky in cribbage. He will be missed.
A private ceremony will be held in Northwest Iowa at a later date.
Donations may be made in Thomas’ name to The Salvation Army, PO Box 269, Alexandria, VA, 22314, or Operation Smile, 3641 Faculty Boulevard, Virginia Beach, VA, 23453.
