Virgene Smith

Virgene Kathryn Smith, 88, longtime resident of Cary and formerly of Dundee, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 15, 2015 at her home with her loving family by her side.

She was born November 14, 1926 in Elgin to the late Andrew and Mildred Miller. She was joined in marriage to the late Willard Duane Smith on December 7, 1947, in Dundee.

Virgene was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. She was a second generation owner alongside her husband, Willard, of W. Smith Cartage, Inc. Family was most important to her; she was a kind, loving, and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, not only to her family but to many others. Virgene loved to garden, travel, and work in the family business alongside her children. She also loved music and dancing, but most of all entertaining, throwing fabulous parties around the family pool. A special thanks to Virgene’s caregivers, for the loving care and comfort they provided to her.

Virgene is survived by her children, Thomas Smith of Cary, James (Betty) Smith of Cary, Steven (Mary Kay) Smith of Woodstock, Susan (Gary) Lindsley of Lake in the Hills, Sharon (Dick) Kunz-Ormsby of Crystal Lake, Mariann (Greg) Hoeft-Werderitch of Crystal Lake, Charlie (Gale) Smith of Crystal Lake, and Patricia (William) Downey of Crystal Lake; grandchildren, Tom (Melissa) Smith of Merced, CA, James (Karyn) Smith of Plainfield, Jeffrey (Nicky) Smith of Algonquin, Jeremy (Kristen Schnell) Smith of Cary, Steven (Megan) Smith of Bull Valley, Bradley (Ashley) Smith of Huntley, Kristen (John) Cannon of Marengo, Tonya (Ryan) Rasmussen of Chicago, Mark (Trudy) Lindsley, Keith (Sylva) Lindsley of Green Bay, WI, Nicole Lindsley of Park Falls, WI, Marty (Nicole) Kunz of McHenry, Kimberly Kunz of McHenry, Daniel (Megan Loker) Hoeft of Cary, Katie (Aaron) Stout of Chicago, Christopher Werderitch of Crystal Lake, Jillian (Mike) Kivland of Crystal Lake, Jeremy Werderitch of Crystal Lake and Scott (Racheal Harford) Carlson of Mears Silver Lake, MI; 23 great-grandchildren; and twin sister, Irene Weidner of Elgin.

In addition to her loving husband, Willard, she was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter, April Reinwand, and sons-in-law, William Reinwand and Daniel Hoeft, and two brothers.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 20, 2015 from 5-8 p.m., at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E Terra Cotta Ave, (Route 176) Crystal Lake. Visitation will continue the following day, Saturday, February 21, from 12Noon until the funeral Mass at 12:30 p.m. at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 410 N First St, Cary, IL 60013. Interment will follow at River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee.
