We would like to celebrate Dr. Amarjit Singh, who lived a life of high achievement, dedicated service, and devotion to his country, community, and family.
Dr. Amarjit Singh was born into a family where education was a priority, and mutual assistance was a family tradition. His father, S. Jagdish Singh, was a science teacher, and later the headmaster of a high school. His mother, Smt. Ishar Kaur, was a homemaker.
His early interest in science, kindled by his father’s lab demonstrations as a school teacher, led him first to Government College, Lahore, then to Harvard University, where he got his Ph. D. in 1949.
Dr. Amarjit Singh returned to India after his Ph.D. to serve the country, and help build the electronics industry of newly-independent India.
He served as Director of CEERI, a national electronics research lab, for over twenty years. Under his guidance as Director, CEERI's successes in indigenous development made possible self-reliance for India's nascent electronics industry. Dr. Amarjit Singh was most proud of his association with CEERI.
For his contributions, Dr. Singh received the prestigious Padma Bhushan national award from the President of India in 1984. The Padma Bhushan award is given for distinguished service of a high order to the country.
Inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa and Acharya Vinoba Bhave, Dr. Singh had a profound reverence for all major faiths. He promoted communal harmony and lived a life of uncompromising integrity, exemplifying an unwavering commitment to truth and nonviolence.
A devoted son, husband, father, brother, grandfather and colleague, Dr. Amarjit Singh always put the needs of others before his own. He is survived by his wife – Surinder Dewan, sons – Harinder, Narinder and Arvind Singh, daughter in-laws – Julie Whitney Singh, Bindu and Neeta Singh, granddaughters – Sonal, Devina and Rena Singh, and grandson – Avijit Singh.
His light will shine for us always.
